How to Quit Porn as a Christian: A Gentle, Practical Guide
You want to stop. You may have promised God, and yourself, more times than you can count. If you're tired of the cycle of trying, falling, and hiding, this guide is for you. It isn't a formula and it won't shame you. It's a set of steps many believers have found helpful, grounded in Scripture and in grace.
Start with who God is, not with how you've failed
Real change rarely starts with self-hatred. It starts with knowing you're loved. "The grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world" (Titus 2:11–12, KJV).
Grace isn't only forgiveness after the fact. Scripture says grace teaches us. You aren't white-knuckling this alone. The Spirit of God is at work in you.
Step 1: Bring it into the light
Tell God plainly what's been happening. Then, when you're ready, tell one trusted person: a pastor, a mentor, a mature believer, or your spouse, if that's wise and safe. You don't have to share every detail. You just need to stop carrying it alone.
"Two are better than one... For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up." (Ecclesiastes 4:9–10, KJV)
Step 2: Learn your patterns
Urges rarely come out of nowhere. Pay attention to when they show up: what time it is, where you are, how you're feeling, what happened earlier that day. Tired, lonely, stressed, bored, and alone with a screen are common pressure points. Writing it down helps you see what's really going on, and gives you something honest to pray about.
Step 3: Make a plan before the hard moment
Decide now what you'll do when an urge hits:
- Stop and breathe. Slow your body down.
- Pray a short prayer. "Lord, help me" is enough.
- Read one verse. Keep a few close at hand.
- Move. Stand up, leave the room, go for a walk.
- Reach out. Text or call someone you trust.
"God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it." (1 Corinthians 10:13, KJV)
Step 4: Guard your environment wisely
Small, practical changes help. Charge your phone outside the bedroom. Put devices away at a set time. Use the parental controls or filters your phone, router, or internet provider already offers. None of this is about earning God's love. It's about making the next right choice a little easier. "Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart" (2 Timothy 2:22, KJV).
Step 5: Fill the space with something good
Quitting leaves a gap. Fill it with Scripture, prayer, rest, friendship, exercise, worship, service, and real connection. "Whatsoever things are true... whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely... think on these things" (Philippians 4:8, KJV).
Step 6: When you stumble, get back up quickly
Slips happen. What matters is what you do next. Don't hide, and don't spiral into "I'll never change." Confess, receive forgiveness, tell your trusted person, look at what led up to it, and keep walking. "When I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me" (Micah 7:8, KJV).
