Bible Verses for Overcoming Lust and Temptation

When temptation hits, it's hard to think clearly. That's why it helps to have God's Word ready before the hard moment comes. "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee" (Psalm 119:11, KJV).

Below are verses many believers lean on in the fight against lust, grouped by what you might need in the moment. They're all from the King James Version. Consider writing a few down, memorizing one this week, or praying them back to God.

When temptation feels overwhelming

"There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it." (1 Corinthians 10:13)

You aren't uniquely broken, and you aren't trapped. God promises a way of escape, and sometimes it's as simple as standing up and leaving the room.

"This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh." (Galatians 5:16)

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." (Psalm 46:1)

When you need to act quickly

"Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart." (2 Timothy 2:22)

Scripture doesn't tell us to argue with lust. It tells us to flee, and not alone but "with them that call on the Lord." Running toward good company is part of running away from temptation.

"I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?" (Job 31:1)

Job made a decision ahead of time about what he'd look at. A settled decision, made in a calm moment, can carry you through a hard one.

For renewing your mind

"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." (Romans 12:2)

"Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." (Philippians 4:8)

"Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word." (Psalm 119:9)

When you've fallen and feel ashamed

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9)

"There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." (Romans 8:1)

"Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me." (Psalm 51:10)

David prayed Psalm 51 after a terrible failure. God didn't throw him away. He restored him. That same mercy is open to you.

"The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit." (Psalm 34:18)

When you feel weak

"For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need." (Hebrews 4:15–16)

Jesus understands temptation from the inside. You can come to Him boldly, even now, even in this.

"My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness." (2 Corinthians 12:9)

For hope that tomorrow can be different

"It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness." (Lamentations 3:22–23)

"For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again." (Proverbs 24:16)

How to use these verses in a hard moment

  1. Pause. Take one slow breath.
  2. Read one verse aloud, slowly.
  3. Pray it back to God in your own words.
  4. Do one thing: stand up, step outside, or text someone you trust.
